Mastered November 2002 by Shaun Toole. This recording is particularly noteworthy for having captured the only performance of "Yours Is No Disgrace" during the Tales from Topographic Oceans tour.

During sign-up for the Detroit Alive and Kicking tree, I got a couple of inquiries about the Madison Square Garden performance on the Tales tour. After I wrapped up the Detroit tree, I pulled out all my disks of the New York performances of the tour. Like Detroit, there are several versions of these recordings, including a vinyl bootleg which came out several years ago.
It sounded like the Mickey Mouse Orchestra and Chorus (it was very sped up) with The Remembering fading out early (why is that song always the one most abused? Yes finally quit playing it!), etc., etc. And there are some disks with other titles, too. The good news is that I have an excellent low-gen copy of the original tape of the 1974-02-18 TFTO tracks. I combined it with a very good second recording of the entire 1974-02-18 concert. With some digital clean-up, I reconstructed the entire concert* and it sounds great! (*Roundabout was not recorded at any of these concerts, apparently, so I substituted a "surprise" version instead.)
Here's a little more info about the recordings: There are three MSG recordings. One is from 1974-02-18 of the 4 Tales tracks only. It was released as The Affirmatives bootleg LP about 10 years ago. The original recording is excellent, and it is complete. I believe my copy was remastered once, but still had some gaps that needed repair. The Remembering faded out on several versions, but the one I have is complete.
The second recording appears to be a complete recording of the 1974-02-18 concert. It includes the Firebird, which had some interesting problems that night, and goes all the way through Ritual. There are speed fluctuations on this tape which worsen as the concert goes on - probably failing batteries. You'd be sea-sick by the time you make it to Ritual. However, the tracks through Close to the Edge are not much affected by this problem.
The third recording is dated 1974-02-20. It contains the same recording of the Firebird and CTTE tracks as the complete 1974-02-18, then switches to a completely different recording of the TFTO tracks, which is presumably the 1974-02-20 performance. There is some dispute as to whether those first tracks are from 1974-02-18 or 1974-02-20, but to me there are clues that indicate they came from 1974-02-18. SMT (2002-01-21)

This recording and the Madison Square Garden 2/18/74 recording are commonly confused. There are two recordings of 2/18/74 - one a better quality Tales-only set, and one lower-quality recording of the complete show. The lower-quality version has speed problems which worsen as the show goes on, until by the time you reach Ritual you will be sea-sick. The first part of the lower-quality recording has been joined to this recording, and had led some to believe there was a complete recording of the 2/20/74 concert. However, this is not so. These four tracks are all that exists of the 2/20/74 show... as of my knowledge at this date. [SMT October 2003]

Notes from newfilm2000@h...: This is a pretty decent (and rare) recording that I obtained from Relayerman - probably not the first recording to obtain if you're just getting into 'TFTO'-era boots, but, not the last, either. There are a few dropouts here and there, it's a bit bassy in parts, trebly in others - but, this is a surprisingly good recording. Artwork also created by moi. :)

Mastered April, 2003 by Shaun Toole: "Fairly boomy, somewhat distant recording which cleaned up fairly well. Mono, like most audience recordings of the day. And what an audience! They obviously knew the TFTO album, based on reactions to the introductions of the songs. The band seems to respond to the energy of the audience, making this one of the best live Tales performances I've heard. A couple of minutes of material is missing from The Revealing Science of God, most likely due to a tape flip. Rather than patch this hole, I used the opportunity to end CD 1 and start CD2 where the second part of the recording begins. There were also some cuts in Roundabout, which sound like the taper cut the mic remote switch on and off a few times. I reconstructed that part of the song from where the phrases are repeated later in the song, but left one spot untouched for reference and to see if you were listening."
