1995-11-14 ~ Lily's In The Field

Lily's in the Field, the 1995 benefit concert starring Annie Haslam, Steve Howe, Justin Hayward, and more. This is a one-disc recording which I mastered from a medium-quality cassette recording of the show. The CD sounds good, but not great. Steve Howe's performance is very good, as are the rest. And Steve and Annie perform Turn of the Century.

I was at the Lily's in the Field show. When I saw Shaun's e-mail, I wondered if I had written a review of the show to give you some feel for it. Looking at the Google archives, I didn't.

Lily's in the Field was a benefit concert organized by former Renaissance vocalist Annie Haslam to aid orphans in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was held at Irving Plaza in New York on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in 1995, the same week King Crimson did a 5 day stint at the Longacre Theater. I blew off a couple classes and took the train up from Philly for the Lily's concert and Crimson the next night. (The Crimson concert was a pretty momentous occasion - the first time I met someone in real life that I knew from the Internet - hi Steve!)

In the lineup were Annie Haslam, Steve Howe, Ian McDonald, Justin Heyward, Phoebe Snow, Gary Brooker of Procol Harem, Roy Wood with Cheap Trick. Al Franken was the emcee. Each artist performed a couple songs on their own. Steve Howe and Annie Haslam performed Turn of the Century and Lily's in the Field together, and this remains the only time they have performed live together. Then they all did a jam at the end, playing In the Midnight Hour.

The jam is cool. Rick Nielson & Steve take solos. Mr. Steve's is very cool, as he is featured on a borrowed Strat, slung over one shoulder.  Earlier in the evening Annie is apparently going on & on Steve makes fun of her behind her back. She catches him, he pretends he's not doing anything & she says "Get a haircut!" GOOD stuff.

Excellent Shaun, I think this is probably the first of the "remasters" sourced from my music library to hit the boards so I'm delighted to hear the news from you that at least something is going out into the public domain :) I suspect the "remasterers" are way too busy to start weeding (?). Thanks a million again to you and all those that have done what they've done so far :) I think a Renaissance show of mine, remastered by Ted Kent will be released soon through Alison. The "Lily's" artwork is very nice :)

Rhea's note provided more info about the concert than I previously had. The tape I used for the CD is incomplete, but now I have a better notion of HOW incomplete it is. Basically it was one 90- or 100-minute cassette's worth of audio. But even though it lacks all the songs and artists at the event, it  does have a complete set by Steve Howe and Justin Hayward, plus the Turn of the Century duet of Haslam and Howe, and more.
